The Art of Being Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving (2)

As you consider all you have to do, and buy, for the upcoming holidays use the hustle and bustle of the season to remind you of all that you have to be thankful for. Not only will your days be more merry and bright, the practice of daily gratitude will lead to a deeper happiness and appreciation of all the people and things in your life.

Unsure where to begin? As you pass the harried mother, children in tow, aren’t you thankful for your own family? Think of each family member and the reasons they are special to you.  Then tell them, a priceless gift from you to them.

Stuck in traffic? You are affluent enough to own a car which, more than likely means, you have a job (or someone who loves you enough to give you a car), a place to live, and can afford life’s little necessities and, perhaps, some of it’s luxuries.  Be thankful for your material possessions, they allow you to do things to enrich your life and the lives of those you care about.

Forced to shovel snow each morning? You are physically well. Many people would gladly trade places. Be thankful for your health and the ability to do activities that you enjoy, and perhaps a few you don’t.

Short on cash? Be thankful for what income you have and then get resourceful. Often times people have enough ‘things’ and what they really want, and need, is time. Schedule a lunch or day trip as a holiday gift. You’ll get to spend  time together doing something both of you enjoy, make some new memories, and reconnect.

I once considered myself very poor and quite frankly from an economic standpoint it was true. Today, I am far from wealthy, from a monetary perspective, and I am rich beyond compare in my relationships, my love of cooking, art, reading, learning, nature, and so much more.

Today I am grateful for all the people in my life, and that includes you.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Ellesig
