Chocolate chip cookies are a long time favorite of my family. Over the years I’ve tried several different recipes, some clipped from magazines, one from the back of the chocolate chip bag, and still others from cookbooks. The recipe I keep returning to is the one I’ve altered from The Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook, my copy is copyrighted 1982, the first edition is from the 1950’s. Sometimes tried and true is best.

I have made a few additions over the years and shared them here. The original recipes says that it will make about 72 cookies-really? Maybe if you’re baking cookies for the bridge club, but for kids? Nope! Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

The mini chocolate chips melt and give the cookies a bit richer taste, the cinnamon enhances the brown sugar without being noticed itself.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/5 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1 3/4 cup chocolate chips

Method

Heat oven to 375.

In a large bowl combine flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon with a whisk. In a mixer, beat butter and shortening on medium speed for about 1 minute. Add sugars and mix till fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing well.

Add dry ingredients one cup at a time, mixing well. Stir in the chocolate pieces.

Drop dough by tablespoonful on to a greased cookie sheet, two inches apart.  Cook for 11 to 13 minutes or till done.

Remove from oven and allow to cool on a cookie sheet for one minute then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Bon Appetit,

Ellesig
